At some point after the "illness" in Skyhold

[Jamie's made Kallian a promise, whether or not she realizes it just yet. While it's probably fairly obvious that he has more than just feelings of friendship towards her, she is still first and foremost his friend. Even before her being outed as a mage, he's been more than willing to step up and protect her, and knowing that she's worried about something happening now only serves to make him more determined to try and keep her safe.

He can't be there all the time, he knows that. But he can be there as much as he can, and if that means he has to keep watch outside her quarters to make sure nothing happens while she's sleeping, then he'll do that, and gladly. He's slept in plenty of odd places before, and having to do so again isn't a hardship. Especially not if it gives her peace of mind.

Tonight happens to be one of those nights, and to all intents and purposes he appears to be dozing in a chair that just happens to be nearby where she's sleeping. There's a part of him that's keeping an ear out for trouble, though, and if anything sounds like it's going wrong, he'll be there to help - even if it's something as simple as a moment of worry or a bad dream.]

[She's not entirely sure what it is that has her waking in the middle of the night, but once she does, getting back to sleep is elusive.

Well, maybe some tea will help. That's what Kallian offers to patients of her having trouble sleeping. She slips a light robe over her nightshift, ready to head over to the kitchens to fetch some hot water. The sight of Jamie in the chair stops her, though, and with a fond smile, she fetches a blanket to drape over him.]

After ritual 1

I just wanted to let you know that I appreciated you being there for me a great deal.

Of course. I couldn't let you go through that alone. I'm just sorry it didn't work as we'd hoped.

The chances of it working were slim, honestly. But we went with what was the least dangerous to start, just in case.

[The small sounds of movement do catch his attention, but people shift while they're sleeping all the time. It's not necessarily something to be all that worried about, and so Jamie doesn't stir - at least not for the moment - and lets himself go back to his half-doze.

It's when Kallian finally comes over and goes to drape the blanket over him that he actually responds, shifting a bit in his chair and opening his eyes to blink at her somewhat sleepily, a flicker of concern coming into his eyes as the fact that she's there and not asleep fully registers.]

Hey, what are you doing up?

...what are you going to do next?

Couldn't sleep. Not sure if it's the place, or just me tonight.

[She shrugs. Exactly where her "quarters" are has been changing every few nights ever since she came back from the Hinterlands, usually wherever she can find a quiet and cozy corner where she's not likely to be disturbed, or vice versa. She hasn't once had a proper bed since she first came to Skyhold.]

I... I'm sorry if I woke you. You can go back to sleep, if you want. I was just going to make myself a cup of tea...

There's another ritual that shouldn't have too high a risk. We're going for that one next, trying to discern where I end and he begins, and urge him out.

There will be a little magic involved, but not too much as to be dangerous. I don't think.

Mm. Och, don't worry about it, it's fine.

[While he does wind up using one hand to rub at his eyes, it's purely out of habit, something he does often enough when he first wakes up. He's not really bothered at all by being woken up like that.]

Although I still say you'd do well with a wee place of your own. Just because I'm used to sleeping wherever doesn't mean that's true for everyone. Want some help with the tea? Could do with a cup of that myself.

I've been sleeping wherever pretty much since my first night outside the alienage. It's fine, really. I don't need much space.

But, I have enough tea to share, if you want... I was just going to get a little water...

Please be careful. I'd feel awful if things went... badly.

Come share a spot of tea with me, would you? I'm not long back from Antiva and I wish to hear all that I've missed.

[Which is a warning that she knows and intends to grill Kallian for it.]

[It doesn't take him long to set the blanket aside and push himself to his feet, giving her a smile as he does so.]

I'd have thought that you'd have moved over to the Warden's camp by now, to tell you the truth. With Anders and Bethany there, you'd have plenty of good company.

...I'm sure tea would be lovely, Madame. Thank you for the invitation.

[She's nervous, yes, but she knows Vivienne won't accept that as an excuse for poor manners.

She arrives promptly at tea time, clean and scrubbed and as presentable as she can make herself.]

...you asked me to come, Madame?

I was there for a few days. But... I didn't feel comfortable in a tent by myself, and... I couldn't impose on them beyond that.

[She heads for the nearest water source.]

Besides. The more I move around, the less chance someone will be able to track where I am and surprise me with a knife between my ribs.

[Jamie follows after, although his eyes do flick away from her and out towards the surrounding area, just to keep an eye on things. If for some reason someone does try to make a move, he'll be ready.]

In a camp full of Wardens? Och, I don't think that's likely.

[He could point out that Anders hasn't had any problems there, after all, and they both know full well that the man has enemies. But then he thinks better of it, simply deciding to shake his head instead.]

And I don't think Bethany would think you'd be imposing if you asked her, either. But you could see about getting another room in here instead, maybe? Something without windows that you can set alarms or wards or something on, maybe. It'll need some work, probably, like the one I'm working on, but I could help you with that too, if you'd like.

I'll be very careful. I don't want anyone who has offered to help to be hurt.

The Wardens aren't obligated to protect me. There are some who do, but that doesn't make me one of them. They have bigger concerns than one elven mage. ...I shouldn't take their attention.

[She finds her way to the kitchens, and gets a kettle of water set to boil by the fires.]

You know, I've never had a real room to myself ever. It's always been shared quarters, apartments that were little more than a single room, or just... wherever I could find a spot out of the way. The idea--a whole room just to myself--it seems... absurd, almost. I don't... I can't justify it. Not when so many people are just living in tents or on cots and bedrolls, no permanent place of their own...

It's a very sweet offer, Jamie, thank you, but there are people so much more deserving than me.

Ah there you are, darling. Do have a seat. We have so much to talk about.

[There's not an invitation to get comfortable. Vivienne is just irritated enough about the deception that she's not feeling that charitable.]

I heard there was illness while I was away?

Yes, Madame. Fevers, hallucinations... All of the healers were working night and day. The source turned out to be contaminated water. You are fortunate not to have been affected.
